Composition

My grandmother, Gerry Wood, lives in a home that was built in the 50's. She has managed to add her own country theme and incorporate it with all of her old
collectibles and furniture from the 50's 60's and 70's. So the home has a retro yet country look to it. As I was wandering around her large home I noticed how pretty the light from her bathroom looked as it shown through her old white curtains into the powder room and living room. I believe that this photo hold good composition because the lighting goes diagonal with the rest of the photo making the eye go directly into the doorway which is the main focus of the photo.

I took this photo shortly after I took the photo above. Even though I during the time I took photos for this collection, the other photos may have been more colorful or have more detail. Yet, I have never taken a photo quite like this one. I really enjoy playing with lighting and I feel that this photo is interesting because not too many homes these days have doors into their sun room like these. Also I love how the
reflecting light coming through the windows here is reflecting on to the right wall. I feel that with out the scattered shadows that these windows created for this photo it would look like they where floating in air but these shadows create composition to balance the image out.

On Saturday, my grandma took my sister, Julie (19) and I too her local Catholic Church. My religion is very important to me and my grandma has always insisted that we keep our faith and go to church every time we visit with her. There have been a few changes in the Catholic Church now after one
receives communion. At one time, after communion everyone would kneel down and pray, today everyone stands. My grandma still kneels. Growing up I have always watched her pray while I was praying and I love the intensity that always shows through in her face while she is doing this. The composition in this photo is created by having two taller objects (people) with one shorter object (grandma) in the middle so the focus is directly on the shorter object.

This next
extremely loud photo was taken in my grandpy's old bed room. My grandma and grandpy shared separate rooms. Since my grandpy passed away in '96 my grandma kept his room exactly the same. As a matter of fact she obviously has kept the room the same since the 50s . I really don't think there are too many house holds left in America with bright red shag carpeting and paisley curtains with matching upholstery and wood panelling throughout the entire room! The room is divided by half of a wall and his large king sized bed. There is a door in this wall that takes you around to the other side of the bed. This wall created a great composition for this photo because it framed the photo along with the large chair to focus in on the colorful curtains that made my granpys closet.

This is Kira, Julie's new German
Shepard/Akita puppy who is three months old. I really love this photo because you can see all of the beautiful little details in her fur and markings. I actually didn't do too much editing with this photo except up the contrast a bit. This is the actual color tone that was going on in the back seat of my sisters, boyfriends car on Sunday and I think it contrasts beautifully next to Kira's jet black fur. I believe the composition in this photo would be the focus on Kira's eye. Though the photo doesn't show her entire face I think it is obvious that this is a photo of a puppy. I also love how when you look at this photo, you can see some sort of emotion going on in Kira's eyes (she missed her mom and dad who just left her alone with me in the car and my camera).

TEST

It was very hard for me to choose what photos I would choose for this blog so i may have cheated and snuck in one extra photo. There where a few themes through out my 200 photo journey. The photos I took with Jamie (black hair) and Stephanie (blond) represent curiosity. The others represented the beauty in the small things in life. I have dabbled with photography, but never with such a refined and expensive camera, and I have a few close friends who share the same past time. I never really new how much work was actually put into making the best shot you possibly can. I have always been one to play with lighting, and texture. I also enjoy going out of my way to take the best possible shot or creative shot for that matter whether I lay on the ground, stand in the street, or balance on a chair. I hope you enjoy my first collection of photography from my Photo Journalism class found on http://joemdkarda.shutterfly.com.

Deceiving Beauty
These fish oil caplets are very pretty but just don't stick your nose anywhere close to them.

Late Night Chill
This is what my refrigerator consists of. When I have parties all of my friends know that they won't find anything worth looking for in there.

A Contrasting Clutch
Even though it may not appear to be so, when I took this photo it was freezing outside. I changed the contrast settings on my editor so that the brick would appear to be hot still leaving the drain pipe freezing.

Still Awake
When I took this photo it was only around six at night. After looking at it after a while it reminded me of those late winter nights when I would still be awake tip toeing around the house to eat some cookies and play with the dog. I told Stephenie to look at the camera with a bit of curiosity and mischievousness, she pulled it off very well.

Wanting To Caught
I really love my sheer purple curtain that hangs in my apartment. I wanted to somehow incorporate it into my photos and at the time Stephanie and I where having a smoke. I took hers away and told her to hide half of her face with it and then I figured letting her have her cigarette back would add some character to the photo. She likes to pose allot, which I find unnatural so I made her laugh and took the shot.

My Space
My friend Jamie and I where walking around Loveland Hall when we spotted some large class display cases. I immediately said "get in there" and she followed my cue. Being that she takes photos as a hobby she understood what I was going for. I told her to put her hands against the glass so it would be apparent that it was there and this is the result.
